Education and Professional Experience

Dr. Bibhas Ranjan Sarkar joined BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus  as Assistant Professor of Chemistry in August 2013

He is a Chemist by training and specializes in Catalysis research with current research focus on 'Development of sustainable catalytic routes to industrially relevant chemical reactions utilizing renewable carbon feedstock (majorly biomass-based chemical platforms, CO2, Agro-waste etc.)

  • Dr. Sarkar obtained his Masters Degree (M.Sc.) in Chemistry from University of Calcutta.

  • Thereafter,  he obtained crucial training while doing his doctoral research at the Homogeneous Catalysis Division of CSIR-NCL Pune under the able supervision of Dr. Raghunath V. Chaudhari, the then HoD of the same, and Deputy Director, CSIR-NCL.
His doctoral research focused on studies of Homogeneous Transition Metal Complexes as Catalysts and Subsequent Immobilization of these to develop heterogeneous catalysts.

  • Post Ph..D., he gathered valuable professional research experience as Scientist-Chemist in Halliburton Technologies India Pvt Ltd. in Pune for about two years.
During this period his area of operation was design and modification of drilling fluids (multi-component complex fluid systems required for oil field drilling operations) with exposure to the science of application materials.

  • Before joining BITS Pilani, he was engaged in post-doctoral research work at the Center for Environmentally Beneficial Catalysis (CEBC) at the University of Kansas (KU), Lawrence, USA for four years.
There, his major areas of activity were studies in application of Gas-expanded liquids using supercritical/ near-critical fluids for enhancing the catalytic performances in industrial catalytic reactions targeting process enhancement. He was also involved in developing catalyst materials which are homogeneous and also separable using Nano-filtration techniques facilitating efficient reuse of catalysts for different chemical applications.
